New Zealand Used Car Dealers Want UK Used Cars

UK used cars are in huge demand from foreign buyers at the moment. The pound is weak at the moment, and this means that foreign importers could stand to save money by importing used cars from the UK instead of from previous key suppliers like Japan.  What does this mean for used car dealers and used car buyers in the UK itself?

The economic crisis and the recession have caused an interesting shift in the used car market in the UK. Countries who have been relatively unaffected by the recession have started to look into importing used cars from the UK thanks to the shift in currency. The pound is at its lowest level in a very long time and importers of used cars in countries like New Zealand are finding that it is more lucrative to import their used cars from the UK rather than from the same old markets in Japan, especially since as of January 1st New Zealand will impose new emission standards on all imported used cars, which many Japanese models don’t meet.

Used car dealers in the UK could stand to make some money off the back of the current financial insecurity in the country. Used cars in the UK meet New Zealand’s emission standards and the European used cars which are available from the UK are often of a higher spec than Japanese used cars.

The effect of the tsunami in Japan is also likely to reduce the number of used cars available from the Far Eastern country. This gives UK used car dealers a window of opportunity to sell large amounts of used car stock to foreign markets like New Zealand.

What does this mean for the home used car market? Well there’s certainly no need to be worried. This development might imply that there will be fewer good quality used cars for sale in the UK but the export of used cars to New Zealand is not yet in full swing. Previously around 200 used cars were exported to New Zealand every month, and although there it is looking increasingly like there will be a spike in British used cars being exported, this has not happened yet and there are still plenty of used cars out there.

Equally, in the current testing financial times, fewer people in the UK are looking into buying ‘new’ used cars and are hanging onto their old motors for longer. The probable increase in used cars getting exported rather than being sold in the UK is unlikely to have a massive impact on the home used cars market, though choice may be slightly reduced.

There are plenty of used cars dealerships in the UK who stock a huge variety of quality used cars. Ron Skinner and Sons (www.ronskinnerandsons.co.uk), for example, certainly haven’t sent all their used cars to New Zealand as they have an impressive collection of used cars with all specs and styles available!
